for the Study of Nationalities 16th Annual World Convention: Charting the Nation between State and Society 14-16 April 2011 New York City Power Sharing: Theory and Practice Abstract The panel examines how current power-sharing arrangements are designed and work in light of the liberal consociational theory of power sharing advanced by John McGarry and Brendan O’Leary. It combines reflections on the state of contemporary consociational theory with single and comparative case studies discussing constitutional arrangements and/or peace agreements that make use of liberal consociational techniques to manage ethnic and other divisions in plural societies.
